ABSTRACT
The human gut microbiome plays a crucial role in maintaining overall health, influencing immune function, metabolism, and disease prevention. This review examines the current evidence supporting the use of probiotics and prebiotics in promoting gut health. Probiotics, defined as live microorganisms that confer health benefits when consumed in adequate amounts, and prebiotics, non-digestible food ingredients that selectively stimulate beneficial bacteria growth, have gained significant attention as therapeutic interventions. Recent clinical studies demonstrate their efficacy in treating gastrointestinal disorders, enhancing immune function, and supporting metabolic health. However, strain-specific effects, dosage considerations, and individual variability in response remain important factors for clinical application. This review synthesizes current research findings and provides evidence based recommendations for the therapeutic use of probiotics and prebiotics in gut health management.
